Expanding Registered Apprenticeship To Underserved Populations

Boldt’s modular shop in Oshkosh, WI is uniqually situated to provide pathways into apprenticeship for traditionally underrepresented populations. The modular shop is enclosed, provides a consistent work location, and allows individuals new to the industry employment that differs from typical construction sites. Partnering with local non-profit employment and training agencies to find candidates for shop positions within modular naturally fit Boldt’s value of supporting the communities we live and work in.

In June 2024, Kamal, a refugee from Afghanistan, was resettled in Oshkosh, WI through a national resettling agency called World Relief and federally supported programs through Forward Service Corporation (FSC). While in Afghanistan, Kamal served on the Bagram Airfield, formerly the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan. During his employment on base, he served alongside the United States Army Corps of Engineers as Electrician and Head Mechanic. Due to his collaboration with the Army Corps, he faced safety concerns and was provided refugee status in the United States. Kamal and his wife came to the U.S. with few belongings, a language barrier, and drive to build connections to key resources in their new environment.

As he began looking for employment, FSC and World Relief used employment and training programs to connect Kamal with job leads in the area. As Boldt partnered with these local entities for candidates, Kamal’s work experience was a natural fit for the team and he joined Carpenters Local Union 955 and Boldt in September 2024.

With Kamal’s skills and personal and professional experiences, he quickly learned the work.

“Kamal is a dedicated worker. Working with him has helped me realize the different ways I can communicate to better support our team.” says Rob Cardew, Fabrication Superintendent.

What excites Kamal the most is how this job opportunity has allowed him to provide for his family and move toward greater self-sufficiency in his new community.

“Joining the union and Boldt helps me feel secure about my future, feel pride, and support my family back home.” said Kamal.

Registered apprenticeship offers individuals the opportunity to earn while they learn, the pride of contributing to the workplace, and the start of a new future.
