Topic: Creating Mutual Benefit: Lessons from a Voyage to IPD

Boldt’s Presenter: Matt Hussin

Date & Time: October 24, 2024 – 9:30AM – 10:15AM

Description:

Georgia-Pacific, Boldt and Baisch will share insights from our eight-year journey from traditional design-bid-build to integrated project delivery through the creation of virtuous cycles of mutual benefit.

The journey has had multiple chapters, starting with a small, schedule-driven project in 2016 through a succession of additional project developments/ executions. These formed the basis for virtuous cycles of mutual benefit and set the stage for our first contractual IPD.

We will share stories of how lessons learned and knowledge shares prompted growth/evolution in how we, and our trade partners and OEMs, partner. Throughout the journey, the partnership has fostered the commitment to learning with and from each other and building resilience in the face of adversity.

Our journey’s success is rooted in the alignment between GP’s Principle-Based Management business philosophy and Boldt’s Values and Virtues. Our focus on cultural/vision alignment was important, but we learned that focus limited to one side of the Lean triangle does not allow a team to fulfill its potential. A focus on all three sides (organizational/operating system/commercial) accelerate the virtuous cycles of mutual benefit.

Learnings also benefited trade and design partners, particularly those related to vision alignment (culture and vision), Lean construction methods and management and the integrated project delivery agreement.

Topic: The Emerging Practice of Design Integration

Boldt’s Presenter: Geoffrey Nelson

Date & Time: October 24, 2024 – 10:45AM – 11:30AM

Description:

With the increase in collaborative styles of project delivery including Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), architectural design and preconstruction efforts are seeing much earlier and much more engaged participation by the full spectrum of designers, engineers and builders. Increasingly, architects are being asked to modify a traditional (and siloed) approach to design development to incorporate a much wider range of design authors and eliminate traditional handoffs between architects, engineers and detailers.

In this panel, we will discuss the emerging field of Design Integration (now that Design Management has been discarded for good reason), and how architects, engineers and contractors are renegotiating their roles in the design process to produce better, more integrated and complete design documentation and more collaborative teams.

Attendees will gain firsthand insights into:

  • Developing more integrated designs —Ranging from safety and quality assurance to cost estimation and interior design—through real-world examples from the ambitious UCSF New Hospital at Parnassus Campus (NHPH) project.
  • Developing specific, effective design development strategies that balance the iterative design skills of architects and the more linear coordination and constructability skills of builders.
  • How integrating data and modeling workflows foster iterative design and a unified information loop, enhancing project outcomes.

Vice President & Director of Integrated Design

Topic: Cultivating Waves of Change: Scaling Continuous Improvement

Boldt’s Presenter: Felipe Engineer-Manriquez

Date & Time: October 24, 2024 – 11:45AM – 12:30PM

Description:

In “Lean Waves: Transforming Construction in LATAM,” Hermosillo shares its pioneering nine-year voyage, navigating the Lean philosophy to revolutionize industrial development in Mexico and beyond. This presentation will chart the course from our initial introduction to lean, driven by international client demands, to the foundational establishment of LCI Mexico and the expansion of lean principles across Latin America.

Topic: Ripple Effects: Scaling Lean Communities in Construction

Boldt’s Presenter: Angela Bowman & Felipe Engineer-Manriquez

Date & Time: October 24, 2024 – 1:30PM – 2:15PM

Description:

Join this panel discussion with Angela Bowman and Felipe Engineer-Manriquez of Boldt, Ray Lota from Kaiser Permanente and Douglas Whiteaker and Victoria Vicente of UC Davis Health, as they unveil the transformative journey of fostering lean communities within the construction industry. These panelists share the journey of why they go through the time-intensive work of making and growing lean communities of practice and what surprising benefits having one has on key performance indicators.

Attendees will embark on a voyage through the practicalities of building vibrant lean communities. These range the grassroots efforts in Northern California, to the strategic sustaining of an original LCI Community of Practice, through the shared learnings of Kaiser’s Southern and Northern California community of preferred providers, and across a general contractor’s entire project portfolio. Through a blend of storytelling and candid revelations, our panelists will share the “how-to’s” and tangible benefits.

Key takeaways include actionable strategies for:

  • Establishing, sustaining and scaling lean communities within your organization.
  • Overcoming resistance to change.
  • Transparent lessons learned, offering a candid view of challenges and victories.

Armed with first-hand accounts of lessons learned and insights gleaned from the field, attendees will leave equipped to spearhead lean initiatives, fostering a wave of change that resonates from individual projects to the wider industry.

Topic: Ocean of Change: An Evolution of Modular Clinics as Products

Boldt’s Presenter: Corrie Neuens

Date & Time: October 24, 2024 – 2:30PM – 3:15PM

Description:

This panel features Boldt, Demain and Boulder Associates sharing their remarkable journey of Indigenous PACT, including unveiling the map for transforming healthcare delivery through Lean, modular design and construction. This session will chart through the creation of a fully-modular healthcare clinic designed to serve underserved populations with unprecedented speed-to-market efficiencies. The collaboration achieved full-scale, permanent facilities in less than half the traditional construction time by reimagining the architectural building program into a scalable, productized solution.

Key takeaways include:

  • How to work with stakeholders to productize visions beyond a single project;
  • How to trades from the outset for holistic efficiency;
  • How to optimize the flow of labor and materials.

Attendees will gain firsthand insights into leveraging these strategies. The presentation will share transparent lessons learned and improvements, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and empowering attendees to lead change in each of their own contexts.

Join this mixed panel of an owner, architect, engineer/trade partner, fabricator and facilitator as they share this groundbreaking approach to Lean design and construction, offering practical ‘how-to’s’ infused with lessons learned and establishing strong, short and continuous feedback loops.
